Bridge Classes in Unit 124

Intermediate Declarer and Defense Play:  Raising your Game!

• Offered Monday mornings  10:00 am - 11:30/ noon starting Jan.  6th 2025
• Class size limited to 8
• No bidding lessons, just declarer play and defense
• Seminar style discussion of hands
• Lesson hands are designed to give you skills for future hands, not double dummy for a particular hand.
• Pace and level of the class will be determined, to a degree, by participants (each topic can start off easily and progress in difficulty)
• $10/ session. Sign up for one or more. Each lesson will be a stand alone class.

1st and 3rd Fridays, starting January 17 No bidding.  Just play of the hand or defense.  Lots of hands for practice. Geared towards people that have some experience but know they can benefit from some coaching and learning.  The aim is to build confidence and technique.

Stand alone lessons, so attend when you can.  Although you can just show up, please let me know if you plan to attend (amy.fshr@gmail.com)so that I can prepare the handouts and hands appropriately.  $10 per session.

Introduction to Bridge, part 1 - "Bridge 101"

 Newcomers to Bridge will begin a 2-course journey to learn this great card game from the beginning (followed by Bridge 102 in “winter quarter”).  No prior bridge experience is necessary, but students should have a serious interest in spending some time learning how to play the game, with a commitment to attend all or most classes.

Where:  Classes are held primarily at the Cincinnati Bridge Center (CBC) though classes may occasionally be conducted virtually if necessary.

When: Tuesdays 2:45PM - 5:15PM, typically starting in late September.

Course duration: 10-14 weeks (10 classes)

Introduction to Bridge, part 2 - "Bridge 102"

Those who have taken an introductory bridge course or have experience playing socially will gain additional skills for this great card game. Topics and course curriculum will follow the ACBL text "Play of the Hand in the 21st Century" but will be adjusted to fit student experience levels. Topics to be covered: techniques for play, strong and weak 2 bids, communication, and beginning conventions beyond the basics.  Bridge 102 would be appropriate for anyone who previously took Bridge 101 or a comparable course (or for someone who played bridge previously and would have comparable experience).

Where:  Classes are held primarily at the Cincinnati Bridge Center (CBC) though classes may occasionally be conducted virtually if necessary.

When: Tuesdays 2:45PM - 5:15PM, typically starting in late January.

Introduction to Bridge, part 3 - "Bridge 103"

Those who have taken at least one introductory bridge course AND have experience playing socially will gain additional skills for this great card game. This course is designed for those having completed 101 and 102 courses previously and have begun to play regularly. Topics and course curriculum will follow the ACBL text "Defense in the 21st Century" but will be adjusted to fit student experience levels. Topics to be covered: defensive signaling, card play, and strategy, Negative doubles and more.

**Approval is required for those who have not completed the Bridge 102 course.

Where:  Classes are held primarily at the Cincinnati Bridge Center (CBC) though classes may occasionally be conducted virtually if necessary.

When: Tuesdays 2:45PM - 5:15PM, typically starting in late April.

Course duration: 7-10 (7 classes)

Intermediate Bridge, part 1 - "Bridge 104"

Those who have learned the basics (typically Standard American) will now be exposed to the bidding upgrades of the "2 over 1" bidding system. Normally this is done over 5 classes and may be taught in person at the Cincinnati Bridge Center or virtually, based on student demand.

Anticipated topics:

1. the “2 over 1” bid
2. Forcing 1 NT
3. Rebids
4. Game vs Slam
5. Review

Intermediate Bridge, part 2 - "Bridge 105"

The class is designed for those who are already playing bridge regularly, are comfortable with the basic bids in Standard America, and no longer feel a need to have their "Quick Guide" cheat sheet at the table to help with routine bidding. This class covers some of the commonly used bridge conventions that are typically not covered in a beginning series of Bridge Courses (and were not cover in Bridge 101, 102, or 103 mentioned above). Some students will know Standard American, others "2 over 1". If you're not sure if this class is right for you, this should be discussed individually with the instructor.

A series of 2 hour sessions will be conducted on some of the following conventions. Typically this will include a 45-60 minute discussion of various topics followed by a 45-60 minute segment where you BID HANDS with a partner. (This class will focus on bidding and we will not be playing any hands).

Conventions/Topics to be covered: Michaels' Cue bid and Unusual 2NT, Opening light, Drury, New Minor Forcing, XYZ, Texas Transfers, DONT, 4 suit Transfers, Ogust, Support Doubles, 4th suit Game Forcing, Jacoby 2NT, 2D GF, Roman Key Card Blackwood (RKBC), and Losing Trick Count.

Introduction to Duplicate Bridge

Designed for players who have completed at least Introduction to Bridge 101 and have started to play bridge. Learn about the tools, mechanics, scoring and concepts of duplicate bridge.

Larry's Bridge to Bridge (B2B)
By Invitation Only
Tuesdays 1:30PM-4:00PM

This is a program for folks coming out of lessons, providing a transition from bridge classes to playing bridge (social or structured play). It offers a time to play informally at the Cincinnati Bridge Center with other beginners with the added benefit of an available "coach" (a more experienced bridge player) to keep you on the right path. Typically there are 2 to 4 tables of people who have recently finished a series of beginning bridge courses and are looking for a way to begin playing this wonderful card game, not just sitting in a class learning about it.

No need to bring a partner. Larry will email prospective students each weekend to see who's interested in the coming Tuesday. If there's enough interest (and we have a 'quorum'), then Larry will hold B2B. Larry will email late Sunday or Monday attendees to confirm that the session will take place.
